Bar-On was a member of the Israeli judo team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and competed in the 57-kg division (lightweight). Bar-On was coached at the Games by 1992 Olympic silver medalist Yael Arad (the first Israeli to win an Olympic medal).
Bar-On, who began to compete in judo because her mother is a judo instructor, finished seventh at the 1999 World Championship. In 1998, she finished in seventh place at both the European and World Championships. In 2001, Orit finished third in the 63-kg class at the British Open and won the gold medal at the German Open and the Israel Championships.
In July 2001, at the World Championships, Orit competed in the 63-kg class and won her first preliminary match, but lost her second bout. In the consolation bracket, she won one fight and lost one, and was thus eliminated from the competition. The previous year at the European Championships, Bar-On received a bye in the first round, but lost in the second round to Lena Goeldi of Switzerland.
