Sabyrov was a member of the Soviet Union boxing team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and competed in the light-flyweight division (106 pounds). In his first bout, Sabyrov beat Joao Manuel Miguel of Portugal on points. He then defeated Dietmar Geilich of East Germany in the quarterfinals and Byong Uk Li in the semifinals (both decisions) to reach the final bout. Sabyrov won the gold medal when he was awarded a 3-2 decision over Hipolito Ramos of Cuba in the gold medal match.
A light-flyweight, Sabyrov was one of the best amateur boxers in the world in the 1970s. He won the gold medal at the European championships in 1979. Two years later, he won the bronze medal.
