In 1946, Mariaschin was an important member of Harvard University's only team to advance to a postseason tournament (NCAA).

Career Highlights:
In 1946, Mariaschin was named first team All-Ivy League while helping Harvard through the regular season with only one loss (19-1). The Crimson earned an NCAA tournament berth by defeating Yale in a playoff, 39-37. In the tournament, the Crimson faced Ohio State in the first round, and lost 46-38, although Saul scored 11 points. In the East Regional consolation game, Mariaschin was held to only 8 points by NYU as the Violets defeated Harvard, 67-61. The following year, Mariaschin had a terrific season. He repeated as first team All-Ivy League and finished seventh in the conference in scoring with 12.6 points per game. Harvard finished with a record of 16-9 (5-7) but did not return to the postseason.

In 1947, Saul was selected in the first-ever NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics as a territorial pick. He played in 43 games for Boston in his one NBA season (1947-48), while scoring 333 points, with 60 assists. The Celtics finished in third place in the Eastern Division that year with a record of 20-28. They lost in the conference semifinals to the Max Zaslofsky-led Chicago Stags, 2-1. Mariaschin played in all 3 games, and averaged 9.7 points per game in the series.
