Belinsky, Bo

Robert Belinsky

This colorful southpaw pitched a no-hitter as a rookie for the Los Angeles Angels in 1962. But he only lasted in Los Angeles till 1964 (he went on to play with three other teams through 1970), and was more celebrated for his Hollywood life (he dated movie stars Mamie Van Doren, Ann-Margret, Tina Louise, and Connie Stevens) than for his on-field accomplishments. Long after his playing days were over, Bo (who had a Jewish mother and non-Jewish father) became a born-again Christian and was a used-car salesman in Las Vegas until his death on November 23, 2001.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. December 7, 1936 - d. November 23, 2001

Career Highlights:
In 1962, Belinsky broke into the majors with the Los Angeles Angels, after he was picked up from the Baltimore Orioles organization in the 1961 expansion draft. His rookie year was spectacular, as he won his first three starts and threw the first no-hitter on the West Coast, against the Orioles, on May 5, 1962. He finished that season with a 10-11 record and 3.56 ERA, and although he led the league in walks with 122, he was also among the league leaders with 3 shutouts (6th), and hits allowed per nine innings (7.16 - 3rd). After a dismal 1963 campaign, Bo went 9-8 for the Angels in 1964 (his only winning season) with a sterling ERA of 2.86. That year was a turbulent one for Belinsky, as he was suspended by the team in August for attacking a sportswriter. Four days after that incident, he was suspended for the season after being assigned to Hawaii (Pacific Coast League) and refusing to report. He remained in the majors, pitching for four teams over the next five seasons.

Career Dates:
Belinsky pitched for the Los Angeles Angels, 1962-1964, the Philadelphia Phillies, 1965-1966, the Houston Astros, 1967, the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1969, and the Cincinnati Reds, 1970.
