A featherweight at the 1988 Olympics, Shmuel finished fifth by reaching the quarterfinals; it was one of Israel's top performances in the Olympic Games up to that point. He turned professional after the Olympics and on February 26, 1990, he defeated future French bantamweight Rehda Abbas in a six-round decision in Nogent, France.
