A South Philadelphia fighter, Burman began his professional career in 1918 with a second-round knockout against Mickey Kramer. He won his first eight fights (five by knockout) before losing to Johnny Lisse in May 1920. Burman responded to the loss by winning 10 of his next 12 bouts. In 1922 and 1923, he fought a series of matches against top featherweight contender Danny Kramer. Bobby lost all three bouts, two on decisions and one via disqualification.
