In the final game remaining in World Cup qualifying, Israel tied Austria 1-1 and did not advance to a playoff. Spain had already advanced to the World Cup Finals from the group and the Israel-Austria match determined the second place finisher (who plays Turkey in a playoff); Israel needed a win while Austria needed either a draw or win. Austria scored in the 92nd minute to tie the game and end Israel's World Cup hopes.
