A member of the University of Pennsylvania eight as a bowman from 1921-1923, Jelinek was a member of the Bachelor Barge Club of Philadelphia in the 1920s. After graduating from Penn with a degree in architecture, he designed a number of factories, office buildings, and apartments in Philadelphia, establishing his own office in 1945.
