An epee fencer, Margolis competed in the team and individual events at the 1960 Rome Games. In the individual competition, Margolis was eliminated in the first round after finishing fourth in his pool (the top three finishers advanced to the next round). In the team event, he helped the U.S. defeat Portugal, 10-6 (Margolis had three wins), but could not stop the Italians from demolishing the U.S., 9-2 (Margolis did not win a bout). The U.S. advanced to the second round, but were eliminated by Great Britain (led by Allan Jay) by the score of 9-5 (Margolis won two matches). One of Margolis' teammates was Dave Micahnik.
Career Highlights:
Margolis was the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) epee champion in 1957 while attending Columbia University (class of 1958). He then won a gold medal in the team epee at the 1963 Pan American Games.
