A member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Werkner competed in two Olympiads for the Hungarian fencing team, winning two medals. A specialist in the sabre, he first competed in the Olympics at the 1908 London Games and helped the Hungarians capture the gold in the team event with wins over Germany (9-0), Italy (11-5), and Bohemia (9-7). Werkner then competed in the individual sabre event and advanced to the final pool, where he finished in eighth place.

Werkner returned to the Olympics in 1912 at the Stockholm Games and again won a gold medal as a member of Hungary's sabre team. He also competed in the individual event, and again advanced to the final pool. Werkner slightly improved on his previous result and finished seventh overall after winning one of seven matches. Among his teammates on Hungary's sabre team at both the 1908 and 1912 Olympics were Deszo Foldes, Oszkar Gerde, and Jeno Fuchs.
