Seymour was a member of the United States track and field team at the 1948 London Olympics, and competed in the javelin throw. In the qualifying round, he finished fourth with a throw of 209'1", and advanced to the finals. In the final round, Seymour had an outstanding throw of 221'7 1/2" to win the silver medal. His distance was, at the time, the best Olympic result by an American in the javelin.

Seymour, who began throwing the javelin while in high school, was one of the world's best in the 1940s. He set the American javelin record twice; in 1945 (235'3") and 1947 (248'10"). Steve was ranked in the top ten four times in a five year span; first in 1947, second in 1948, tenth in 1950, and ninth in 1951.
