A member of the United States boxing team at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, Vogel finished in fifth place in the featherweight class.

Career Highlights:
Called the "pocket edition of Benny Leonard" by Ring magazine, Vogel began his professional career in 1921. A lightweight, he defeated future world champion Jimmy Goodrich in a 10-round decision in December, 1923. Three years later, Vogel defeated contender Billy Petrolle in a 10-round decision. Never given a title shot, Sammy fought until 1928 and defeated Tommy Jordan and Eddie Elkins in decisionsbefore retiring that year with 39 wins in 48 career decisions.
