Gitlitz was an alternate for the United States boxing team in the light-heavyweight division at the 1924 Paris Olympics, but did not compete in the Games.
Career Highlights:
Gitlitz turned professional as a light-heavyweight following the Olympic Games. In March 1925, Murray defeated Eddie Lagos in a six-round decision in New York City. Two years later, Gitlitz was knocked out in the sixth-round by world light-heavyweight champion Jimmy Slattery in a non-title fight. By the late 1920s, Murray was fighting as a heavyweight and he took on future No. 1 contender "Two Ton" Tony Galento in May, 1929, in Galento's hometown of Newark, New Jersey. The two boxers battled for 10-rounds, but Gitlitz lost the decision.
