Bly rode in the top American sled, which was driven Hubert Stevens, the 1932 two-man Olympic champion. Bly and the U.S. team ran four heats (1:25.61, 1:19.17, 1:20.51, and 1:18.84) and finished in a total time of 5:24.13, just 0.72 seconds behind Great Britain to win the bronze medal.

During the practice sessions, Bly and his team were thrown from their sled following a serious spill; Bly was unhurt. Along with other spills, there were discussions regarding postponing or cancelling the competition, but these never came to fruition.
