Olympic Info:
Goldstein, an epee specialist, competed in three Olympiads for the United States. In his first Olympic competition at the 1948 London Games, he competed in the team epee event but the U.S. was eliminated in the early rounds after losing to Luxembourg (6-8); they did not place in the top eight.
Goldstein returned to the Olympics at the 1956 Melbourne Games, where the U.S. epee team was eliminated in the first round of the competition. They lost to Great Britain, 9-7, although Goldstein won two of his four matches during that round, then fell to Italy (Goldstein did not fence against the Italians). One of Ralph's teammates in 1956 was Abram Cohen.
Goldstein's final Olympic appearance was at the 1960 Rome Games, where he was the captain of the U.S. fencing team. The U.S. advanced to the second round, but were eliminated by Great Britain (led by Allan Jay) by the score of 9-5.
Career Highlights:
Goldstein, was one of America's top fencers in the 1940s and 1950s. Following his competitive career, he became a coach and was very influential in U.S. fencing. He served as secretary of the Amateur Fencer's League of America, was an editor emeritus of American Fencing Magazine, an adminstrator for the U.S. Fencing Association, and was a member of the State Games committee. Goldstein also competed in the Maccabiah Games. The Ralph Goldstein Memorial Epee Open is held each year. He is a member of the U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame.
