Harmenberg was a member of the Swedish fencing team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and competed in the epee events. In the individual epee competition, he won the gold medal; the Swedish team placed fifth in the team epee competition.

Career Highlights:
Harmenberg won the world championship in individual and team Epee events in 1977, and won a bronze in team epee in the 1979 World Championships. He also won the individual epee World Cup championships in 1977, 1979, 1980, and the team epee titles at the 1977 and 1980 World Cups. He is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
