Bauer was a member of the United States rowing team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and competed in eight-with-coxswain event (the coxswain steers and directs). The U.S. team reached the finals, where they finished in third place (5:48.26) to capture the bronze medal.

Career Highlights:
A member of the U.S. national rowing team in the 1980s, Bauer competed in three World Championships as a coxswain in the eight-oared shell. The U.S. finished third in 1981, seventh in 1983, and first in 1987. Before joining the U.S. national team, Bauer led Yale University to a victory over Harvard, thus ending a 19-year losing streak for Yale. Bauer became a dedicated walker during his rowing days and is currently the editor-in-chief of Walking Magazine. He authored Walking to Fitness, and The 90-Day Walking Program. He had previously been the editor of Ultrasport. In 1998, Bauer was inducted into the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame.
