At the 1896 Athens Olympics, the first modern Olympic Games, Schmal competed in both fencing and cycling for Austria. In the cycling competition, he won three medals: the gold medal in the 12-Hours Track event (183.5 miles), and the bronze medals in the one-lap race and 10,000-meter race. Schmal abdicated his place in the 100-km track race. He also finished fourth in the individual sabre competition, winning one of four bouts.
