He lost to Attila Latak of Hungary in the first round, and Ognian Nikolov of Bulgaria (the eventual silver medalist) in the second round. Tsabari was eliminated from the competition after losing to Nikolov. He officially finished 12th.

On September 4, 1972, Tsabari was taken hostage by Palestinian terrorists along with several other members of the Israeli delegation, but managed to escape after pushing one of the terrorists and fleeing under a firestorm of bullets. Unfortunately, 11 other Israeli athletes and coaches were not able to escape and were massacred by the Palestinians.
