A Danish boxer, Michaelsen competed for his country in the heavyweight division at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He received a first-round bye (drew no opponent) and then defeated a French fighter named Garbedois in the second round. Upon reaching the semifinals, Jacob faced Arturo Rodrigues Jurado of Argentina (the eventual gold medalist) and lost a decision. He then fought in the third-place bout against a Norgwegian and captured the bronze medal when his opponent retired.
