Patkin was a member of two Soviet Olympic volleyball teams in the 1970s. At the 1972 Munich Games, the Soviets were favored to win the gold medal, and they cruised through their opponents in the preliminaries. They defeated Tunisia (3-0), Columbia (3-0), Hungary (3-1), Czechoslovakia (3-0), and Poland. In the semifinals, however, the Soviets were upset by East Germany (1-3), but they defeated Bulgaria, 3-0, in the third place match, to capture the bronze medal.

Patkin returned to the Olympics in 1976 at the Montreal Games and the Soviets went undefeated in their preliminary group, beating Italy (3-0), and Brazil (3-0). The Soviets then defeated Cuba in the semifinals (3-0) , but lost to Poland in the final match (2-3) to win the silver medal. One of Patkin's teammates at both Olympiads was outside hitter Efim Chulak.

Career Highlights:
A member of the Soviet Union's National volleyball team in the 1970s, Patkin won a gold medal at the 1971 European Championships. He is currently the Secretary General of the Russian Volleyball Federation.
