Despite high expectations, the U.S. lost to Sweden and Canada in the preliminaries, although they did win their preliminary match against Belarus. The Americans were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by Czechoslovakia, the eventual gold medalists, led by goalie Dominik Hasek and forward Jaromir Jagr.
