An excellent diver in the 1950s, Brenner competed for the Soviet Union at two Olympiads. At the 1952 Helsinki Games (the first time the Soviets competed in the Olympics), he finished in the top ten in both the springboard and platform events. In the springboard, Brenner placed seventh in the qualifiers (with 69.37 points) and advanced to the final round. In the finals, he finished in eighth place with 126.31 points (the gold medalist had 156.28 points). In the platform competition, Brenner finished in eighth place in the qualifiers (71.01 points) and then placed fifth in the finals with 165.63 total points.

Four years later at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Brenner again competed in both the springboard and platform diving events. In the springboard, he finished in sixth place in the finals with 139.84 total points, 11 points behind the bronze medalist. In the platform competition, Brenner came even closer to medaling, finishing fifth in the preliminary round (with 76.36) to advance to the final. In the final round, Brenner again finished in fifth place with 142.95 points, less than 7 points behind the third-place diver.

Career Highlights:
At the 1954 European Diving Championships, Brenner captured the gold medal in the springboard and highboard events.
