Leonid Zakharovich Stein — Chess

Stein was headed for the European Team Championship in Bath when he was found dead of a heart attack, in his Rossiya hotel room in Moscow.

Career Highlights:

Stein was made Honored Master of the Sport: 1965.

He was a three-time Soviet Champion (1963, 1965, 1966), and finished fifth in a qualifying round of six players who met in 1965 to determine the challenger for world champion. Stein was a winner of several team championships of Europe and a number of international tournaments. Away from the board, Stein was a coach and a chess journalist.

Karpov said that "Stein had a fantastic talent. He possessed a keen intuition when it came to games with ambiguous results. His contribution to the intellectual treasury of chess is an important one in its color and originality."

Playing on the USSR team, Stein won the 1964 Olympiad, scoring 10 points out of 18. In the 1966 Olympiad he scored 9 out of 12.
