Career Highlights:
Born in San Francisco, Mayer's father was from Hong Kong. While playing at the University of California-Berkeley, he caught the attention of major league scouts. In 1952, he left school and signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox. Mayer spent the next five years in the minors, during which time he was traded twice, first to the St. Louis Cardinals and then the Chicago Cubs.
In 1957, Mayer made his major league debut with the Cubs. After appearing in only three games that year, Mayer had a solid season the following year. He appeared in 19 games and had an ERA of 3.80 while fanning 14 batters in 23.2 innings. He played two more seasons of professional baseball in the minors and then retired in 1960. He later became an elementary school teacher.
