In the late 1950s, Klein was one of Princeton's best players at a time when the Tigers were one of the best teams in the Ivy League. In 1957 the squad captured a third-place finish (9-5, 14-9 overall), then ended the following year (1958) in second place (9-5, 15-8). That season, Klein was named All-Ivy League honorable mention.

In 1959, Klein's senior season, he repeated as All-Ivy League honorable mention and started every game for Princeton; in fact, the same five players started every game for the Tigers that year, setting an Ivy League record. Princeton also tied Dartmouth for first place in the conference with a 13-1 mark (19-5 overall).
In the playoff game with the Big Green to determine the conference champion, Klein scored only seven points on 1-7 shooting from the floor and Princeton lost the match, 69-68. Dartmouth was led by two Jewish stars, future NBA All-Star Rudy LaRusso and All-Ivy guard Chuck Kaufman.
