Grower played three seasons of varsity basketball at Rutgers University in the 1930s. As a sophomore in 1932-33, he helped the Scarlet Knights finish with a record of 8-6. The following year, they finished 9-6. Then, during his senior season of 1934-35, the Knights finished with an outstanding 13-3 record.
