Doron, Shay

Doron, a promising shooting guard, had an outstanding freshman year for Maryland in 2003-04. Her main asset is her fierce competitive spirit and unquenchable thirst for victory. Her coach Brenda Frese was duly impressed by her form: she brings a level of maturity to her game and to her outlook on life that you dont find in most 18-year-olds. She is focused, driven and ready to do whatever it takes to not only compete but to excel in the ACC.

Shay admits she is more interested in playing ball, then in studying. Aside from her considerable skills, she is also known in campus for her abnormally large (size 11) feet.

Career Highlights:
Doron played for Rotenberg High School in Tel-Aviv before transferring to New York, where she starred at Christ the King High School, located in Great Neck. In her senior year, Shay led the school to the 2002 New York State Federation finals and to CTK's 19th-consecutive Diocesan crown. She averaged 17.2 points, 4.2 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 6.0 steals per game as the team was ranked No. 1 in the entire country. Doron won plenty of personal accolades as well, securing the Battle of the Borough's MVP award. Shay made the all-borough first team and was picked for the USA Today's Super 25 list. She was also named for the All-Star Girls Report and as a Blue Star Report Top 10 guard, and by the same paper as a Junior All-American.

The youngster is already on the senior Israeli national team squad. She played for the Israel Under-21 team in the 2004 European Championship semi-final tournament held in the Ukraine. Her team lost 78-44 to a vastly superior Russian team in the first game, but Doron was impressive with 12 points and a good defensive performance. Israel lost again to the Ukraine 80-73 in the second game, but Shay was in top form as she scored 20 points. The Israeli star finally led the team to victory, 83-60 in the third game, with an 18 point display. A 53-50 loss against Finland ended all hopes of qualification, but Shay continued to shine, scoring 21 points and rounding out a superb tournament with 11 points in a 69-57 victory over Germany. Doron was the obvious choice as tournament MVP, despite Israels poor performance.

Shay was a much sought-after player coming into her freshman year, and chose the University of Maryland as her new home. She was the leading scorer on the team in 2003-04, with 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Maryland qualified for the NCAA tournament with a 17-12 regular season record. The Terrapins upset the Miami Hurricanes 86-85 in the first round, as Doron helped the team come back from a 10 point deficit in the first quarter with a 19 point performance. Maryland was then eliminated by LSU in the second round, though Doron scored 23 points and plucked 5 rebounds in a brave but futile performance. Shay was named All-ACC, 3rd team, and all-ACC, Freshman 1st-team.
