Farber, Saul

Farber played basketball at Northwestern University in the early 1930s and helped lead the Wildcats to a Big Ten title in 1931. He was also a member of the Northwestern baseball team.

Career Highlights:
Farber, who grew up in Chicago and attended Marshall High School, played two seasons of varsity basketball for Northwestern. A member of the team in 1931, he helped the Wildcats finish the season with a 13-1 overall record and a 11-1 record to win the Big Ten championship. The following season, Farber started at guard for much of the year and in a mid-season game against USC, led by Jerry Nemer, he scored seven straight points to lead Northwestern to a 22-20 victory. Northwestern finished the season with a record of 13-5, 9-3 in the Big Ten and finished in second place.

After his collegiate career, Farber became a coach and continued to play basketball in the B.B.Y.O. (B'nai B'rith Young Organization) League for Lakeview Lodge. One of his teammates was future U.S. Congressman Sid Yates. In the early 1940s, Farber was chairman of the annual Chicago BBYO basketball tournament. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the air corps.
