Ladar, born in Northern California, lost his mother at an early age and lived at the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum until he was 11 years old. A member of the Olympic athletic club of San Francisco, and played one season of varsity basketball at the University of California-Berkeley. According to the American Hebrew, Ladar was the school's first Jewish basketball captain in 1924-25. That year, Cal finished 11-4 and won the Southern Division of the Pacific Coast Conference. Then, in the Conference playoffs, they defeated Oregon State in a best of three series to capture the Conference title.
