Career Highlights:
Nicknamed the "Hebrew Hammer," Halpern began his professional career as a heavyweight in the 1950s. During that decade, he was considered a journeyman boxer, but had much success, defeating such fighters as Moses Sterling (twice), Moses Walker, Chet McCord, and Art Mayorga. In 1958, Halpern fought contender Tom McNelly (who would fight for the title against Floyd Patterson in 1961) and lost a four-round decision. After retiring soon after, Halpern then made a comeback two decades later in the mid-1970s. In November 1976, Halpern fought future world champ Trevor Berbick in Berbick's second career fight; Halpern lost on a third-round technical knockout. The "Hebrew Hammer" fought two more years and defeated the likes of Diego Roberson and Johnny Blaine before retiring for good in 1978.
