In December 1939, he lost a ten-round decision to welterweight contender Bobby Pancho, who had twice fought for the world title (his second title bout was in two months before the bout with Smith). One year after that fight, Smith had made his way East and won a bout against Eddie Dunne on a third-round technical knockout. The following month, Smith fought Young Kid McCoy, Michigan welterweight champion, and lost an eight-round decision at the famed Madison Square Garden.
