Taimanov, Mark Evgenievich

Taimanov, by profession, was a pianist, but as an author and journalist also wrote extensively on the subject of Chess.

Career Highlights:

Taimanov was made Honored Master of the Sport in 1960

Taimanov played in 23 USSR championships (1948-76). He won the 1955 Junior World Championship. The winner of many international tournaments, Mark was crushed by Fischer in 1971 (+0=0-6).

Playing on the USSR team Taimanov was the winner of the 1956 Olympiad.

Taimanov made notable contributions in the development of opening techniques (e.g. The Nimzovich Defense). Levenfish said of him, "[Taimanov is] a diverse and deep chess player... he typically has a keen understanding of his position, an aggressive style of planning and calculation accuracy."
