Evans, Larry : Jews In Sports @ Virtual Museum

Evans, Larry

At the age of five, Evans learned the game from his brother, who was later killed in action as a bomber crew member during WWII.

He once gave a simultaneous exhibition at an insane asylum, winning 39 matches and losing only 1. When he went to congratulate the winner, the winner said, "You don't have to be crazy to play chess, but it sure helps!"

In 1951 Evans was the U.S. Open Champion, (defending the title again in 1952-54 and 1962); the U.S. Closed Champion, and the U.S. Speed Champion, all at the age of 19.
He successfully represented U.S. in the international team-play, and won the 1950 speed tournament.

Origin:
Reno, Nevada, USA
