Golombek gave up his family grocery business for a career in chess, taking a break from the game to serve in the Royal Air Force during WWII.

Career Highlights:
Harry was on the British team at the 1935 and 1937 chess Olympiads. Golombek won the Antwerp international tournament in 1937 and took first place in the British championship tournaments of 1947, 1949, and 1955. He was also a well-known writer of chess and edited the British Chess Magazine.
