Kolisch, Ignatz

In his early years Kolisch was the private secretary to the Russian Prince Urusov. He later became a wandering chess professional and settled in Vienna where he met Albert Rothschild. There Kolisch became involved in banking and became a millionaire and chess patron.

1837 - 1889

Career Highlights:
In 1858-1859 Kolisch toured Europe giving chess exhibitions and winning the 1860 international tournament. In 1867 he was granted the Napoleon III Prize for defeating the greatest masters of the day.
