In 1923, Kupchik tied with Frank Marshall—the American champion—for the American Chess Congress' title, and was the runner-up to Capablanca—world champion—at the Pan-American tournament.
He was a member of the winning U.S. team playing in the international team competition.
Between 1936 and 1940 he was considered one of top 10 players in the country, placing eighth or higher in national tourneys.
