Mieses, Jacques

Mieses was nearly 80 when the Nazis expelled him from all chess-clubs, but with determination he continued to participate in international tournaments.

Career Highlights:

One of Germany's leading international chess-players of the late 19th century. Mieses came in third in the 1889 international tournament, and held first place in 1907 and 1923.
An expert in blindfold chess, he once played 99 games in a five-day tour, winning 71 and drawing 28.
He published many chess books, and wrote chess columns for numerous European newspapers.
