Rice was a millionaire, president of the first company to make rubber tires, organized the first taxi service in New York, and one of the earliest developers of the submarine. He was the founder of General Dynamics.

In the dawn of the twentieth century, Rice became regarded as a prominent chess player in the U.S. He has been credited with the invention of an opening play called "the Rice gambit," spending $50,000 to subsidize it.
