Kramnik was born into a culturally rich family (his father was an artist and a sculptor and his mother was a music teacher). Vladimir was attending professionally run chess clubs by the age of five.

Career Highlights:

At the age of 11, Vladimir was awarded the title of candidate master, and soon joined the famous Botvinnik school. He went on to become the World Candidate and World Junior Champion.

Kramnik took part in winning Olympiad teams in:
1992�Manila, playing as 1st reserve with the best overall score of 8.5/9.
1994�Moscow, playing Board 2, with the score of 8/11.
1996�Yerevan, again playing Board 2, scoring 4.5/9.

Vladimir has been rated one of the top 3 players world-wide since 1995. In 1996, only 21 years old, he became the world's #1 player. Ranked #2 as of 2001, Kramnik is known for maintaining maturity of play beyond his age. Until July 2000, he stayed undefeated in over 80 international games.
