As a sophomore, he moved into the starting line-up and then remained there at guard for the remainder of his college career. In 1929, the Maroon had a record of 7-3-0, including a 13-6 victory over conference rival Indiana; during the game, Horwitz blocked two punts. That year, he was named All-Western Conference honorable mention.
