Career Highlights:
Although overshadowed by Yale's back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners in 1936 and 1937 (Larry Kelley and Clint Frank), Hessberg had an oustanding career for the Bulldogs in the mid-1930s. Against Navy in October 1935, 64,000 fans saw Hessberg score on a 12-yard run in Yale's 7-6 winning game. Yale went on to finish the season 6-3-0.

The following year, the Bulldogs had a record of 7-1-0 and finished the season ranked No. 12; their only loss was to No. 13 Dartmouth, 11-7. In 1937 Al was named Grantland Rice All-America honorable mention and Yale finished the year ranked No. 12 with a record of 6-1-1. The team's only loss was to Harvard, 13-6, in the final game of the season.
