Weiner played on the offensive line for Kansas State before playing in the NFL. In 1938, Bernie was named AP All-Big Six first team and the Wildcats had a record of 4-4-1. They were 6-12-0 in Weiner's final two seasons. Bernie also played on the West team in the 1941 East-West Shrine Game.

After graduating in 1941, Weiner was selected in the ninth round of the NFL Draft (98th overall) by the Brooklyn Dodgers; he was only the seventh player in Kansas State history to be drafted. Although Bernie did not play that season, he appeared in 10 games for Brooklyn in 1942; that season the Dodgers had a record of 3-8-0.
