In 1944, Klein was named AP All-SEC (Southeastern Conference) third team as Kentucky finished the season with a record of 3-6-0 (1-5-0 in conference). In 1946, the Wildcats had a record of 7-3-0 under new head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

In 1947, they finished with a record of 8-3-0 (2-3-0 in conference) and went to the school's first-ever bowl game. Led by Hall of Famer George Blanda, Kentucky defeated Villanova, 24-14, in the 1947 Great Lakes Bowl.
In the opening game of the 1948 season, Klein scored on a 70-yard touchdown run (the 20th longest run all-time in school history) against Xavier. He ended the day with 106 rushing yards in the Wildcats' 48-7 victory over Xavier. That year, the Wildcats finished with a record of 5-3-2. Norman played in the 1948 North-South Game.
