Basset played quarterback for Harvard and in 1961, led the Crimson to its first Ivy League championship. The following year, he was named All-Ivy honorable mention as he completed touchdown passes of 82-yards (against Dartmouth) and 76-yards (against Brown).

In 1961, the Crimson earned its first share of an Ivy football championship, finishing 6-1-0 in the League after topping No. 14 Yale, 27-0 (6-3-0 overall); Columbia shared the title. In 1962, Basset was named AP and Ivy League coaches All-Ivy League honorable mention as the Crimson finished the season with a record of 6-3-0 (5-2-0 in conference). They finished 5-2-2 (4-2-1 in conference) in 1963.
