Ira Pauly

Pauly was a center for UCLA (University of California-Los Angeles) in the early 1950s, and won the NN Sugarman Perpetual Trophy for Best Leadership as a senior in 1953. That year, Pauly was also named to the Academic All-American team as UCLA won the PCC and played in the Rose Bowl. One of Ira's teammates on the 1953 team was All-conference selection Myron Berliner.

Career Highlights:
A three-year letterwinner, Pauly played center for UCLA in the early 1950s. As a sophomore in 1951, he helped the Bruins finish with a record of 6-3-0. The following year, the Bruins won the first eight games of the season by a combined score of 208-41. In the final regular season game, they faced arch-rival (and undefeated) USC in the Rose Bowl to determine the conference champion. The Bruins lost to the Trojans, 14-12, and USC went on to play in the Rose Bowl. UCLA finished the year with a record of 8-1-0 and were ranked No. 6 in the nation. That season, Pauly was awarded Captain Don Brown Memorial Trophy for Most Improved Player.

In 1953, UCLA finished the regular season with a 8-1-0 record and won the PCC title. In the season finale, they avenged the previous year's defeat at the hands of USC with a 13-0 victory. In the Rose Bowl, the Bruins played the defending national champion, Michigan State, but lost to the Spartans, 28-20. UCLA finished the year 8-2-0 and ranked No. 4 in both the AP and UP year-end polls.
