In 1935, the Golden Bears won their first nine games of the season by a combined score of 143-9. The only points they allowed were scored by UCLA (two) and USC (seven). In the final game of the season, however, they fell to Stanford, 13-0. Cal finished the season with a record of 9-1-0 and tied for first in the Pacific Coast Conference.

The following year, Cal finished the season with a record of 6-5-0 (4-3-0, 4th in PCC), but upset No. 13 USC, 13-7, in the eighth game of the year.
