Emil Hirsch
Emil G. Hirsch
Hirsch, who played in the University of Pennsylvania's first football game, was the son of the Grand Rabbi of Luxembourg. He came to the U.S. at the age of 15 when his father became rabbi of a congregation in Philadelphia. Later, Emil became rabbi of the Sinai Congregation in Chicago, and edited The Reform Advocate. In Booker T. Washington's Up From Slavery: An Autobiography, Washington wrote that he and Hirsch both gave speeches at the University of Chicago in celebration of the end of the Spanish-American War.
