A back at the University of Maryland in the 1930s, Sachs was named to Harry Newman's Jewish All-America squad (second team) in 1934.

After his college career, Sachs played semi-pro football in the Washington, D.C. area with the Washington Pros. He also played for the Maryland Athletic Club in the South-Atlantic Professional League.

Before attending Maryland, Sachs was a star football player at Eastern Tech High School and captained the team in 1931. At Maryland, Sachs started at fullback as a sophomore, when the Terrapins finished with a record of 3-7-0. The following year, they improved to 7-3-0. In Sachs' senior season, the Terrapins opened the year with a 39-6 victory over St. John's College - Sachs scored a touchdown in the game. Maryland finished the season with a record of 7-2-2.
