Following his career as a lineman at the University of Georgia, Oberdorfer went into insurance and later served as honorary national vice-president of the Anti-Defamation League, and honorary national chairman of the Joint Defense Appeal. His grandfather fought as a cavalry officer for Virginia in the Civil War.

Oberdorfer played both guard and center for the University of Georgia team in 1919 and 1920. In 1919, Georgia had a record of 4-2-3. The 1920 Georgia team went undefeated (8-0-1), but due to a knee injury, Oberdorfer was unable to finish the season.
